Last week of Genius Hour, what can you say? It has been tremendously hectic. Project, after project, after project it seems like. Coming back after Thanksgiving Break hits very hard. However, for our last and final week of Genius Hour, most of our days have been consisted of finishing up some final editing on our sports videos and working on our final presentation. Hailey finally has gone back and finished editing and added final touches to the sports videos. We have looked over our website as well to make sure that everything looks neat and in place. The last thing that we need to worry about now is working on the final presentation and rehearsing it before the big day comes: PRESENTATION DAY!
BY THE WAY, ALL VIDEOS ARE UP AND READY TO GO! BE SURE TO CHECK THOSE BAD BOYS OUT! (ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT A GOOD LAUGH!) Also, Hailey has gone back and edited all of the blog posts to make sure that they look amazing and ready to go. Hailey can definitely say that editing videos are not hard, but it is not easy. It can be very time-consuming, but watching the final product is what keeps the mood alive. Lots of hard work has been put into this project to make it look the best as it can be. One thing that we have both learned is that you should NOT wait until the last minute to do something. For example, GENIUS HOUR. You have twelve weeks to do it. DO NOT wait until the final week to get your website set up and ready to go. It is not worth it. All in all, Genius Hour has been a bittersweet ride for both of us, to say the least. We have had our bumps on the road, but that is okay. The main point of this project is to show your progress, whether that is success or even failure. For us, we have been through both. Well, until next time, goodbye Genius Hour!

This has been a very ironic experience for us. For the first time in forever, we had finally had a designated time and day set aside for us to film our Genius Hour sports videos. Our busy schedules and our awful time management were usually the two things that had put us behind where we wanted to be with editing/filming our videos. However, it was not our busy schedules or time that interfered with us not being able to film. Sadly COVID struck one of the Athletic Beasts. Due to Melia getting COVID, I (Hailey) sadly had to play basketball by myself. However, I did have help from a special guest.(stay tuned to see who that is) Without having my partner in crime right beside me for our last sport, my special guest helped with film and he gave me pointers on how to really play basketball.
I went to the YMCA in Mocksville. While I was there, I did some layups to warm up. I only did the right side though because I do not like doing the left side. (I don't know.. it just feels weird to me to do it on the left side) Then, I decided to do a few jump shots from different places on the court, I surprisingly did not do too bad while doing those. I lowkey impressed myself. Next, I got some footage of me dribbling with the master skills that I uphold. And of course, to end it all, I shot some threes. Definitely, something I will need to work on as you will be able to tell whenever we upload our videos. Out of all of the 5 threes that I shot, I made 1 out of 5. However, the last shot I made was a corner shot. #Yolo Overall Feelings: Hailey: "Overall, I give this experience a 8/10. It was fun, but it just wasn't the same without having Melia there. I felt like it made everything harder without having my partner. Overall, I had fun, but it would have been better if Melia was there." Melia: “I would have loved to be apart of basketball this week, but sadly I got COVID. Luckily my symptoms were mild and I was not in that bad of shape. I am so proud of Hailey for still continuing to do Genius Hour even though I was not able to do it with her.” With Genius Hour coming to an end, we decided that we were going to be something huge for our last sport. We were going to do something along the lines of martial arts. The plan was to go to a free Krav Maga class. However, of course, our biggest enemy decides to come in and burst our bubbles: our busy schedules. Since volleyball has become more and more intense over the weeks, as well as school work, we mapped out our weeks and saw that not a single day could line up perfect for each of us. We both have different volleyball schedules, so if one has practice, the other does not. We sadly decided to come to an agreement that we would not do any sort of martial arts without one or the other. If we were to do that, we would want to do it together and it would be a memory that would last forever.
On the other hand, for our NEW sport, we will be doing basketball! Out of all the sports, we chose basketball because we thought it would be easy to go to a court, or even go outside and play and overall, it would be a very funny and interesting competition between us. Again, our busy schedules come into play. We decided that on 12/04/21 we ACTUALLY get together no matter what. We set aside this day to get our LAST sport documented, no matter what happens... we are DETERMINED that absolutely nothing will get in our way. Again, we are very disappointed to make the decision to not do any martial arts because we left the last sport to be the best sport, and of course, time ruined it once again. However, we feel that basketball is going to be very high energy and there will be no dull moments. So... STAY TUNED! Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting grammatical errors. This week, we were able to chill and focus on school work and deal with our new volleyball schedules. A lot of this week was figuring out how we would edit our videos and decide when to post them. Due to being busy and our schedules not lining up the way we would like them to, we have decided that we would not post our videos until Week 12. Although, we do have one of our golf videos out, (YOU SHOULD GO CHECK IT OUT, IT IS AWESOME) we have felt that it is best if we wait so that we know we have all the right material out for everybody to see. (Again, you should check under our sports tab to see the magic happen!) This is not what we had originally planned to do, and it is certainly not something that we want to do, but to keep everything organized and neat, we feel that it is best that we wait.
Lots of this week showed us that due to being busy 24/7, it is going to be difficult to make sure that things run as smoothly as possible. We are highly disappointed that we made the decision to not post until the last week, but again, it is for the good of our project. However, on the bright side, we have made lots of progress editing our videos the best way that we could. We shoot our videos on our iPhones, and then we use an editing app called "InShot." Very easy and smooth to use, highly recommend. Again, our videos are slowly coming along and they are looking pretty solid. We cannot wait to show you guys our final project! Overall Feelings: Hailey: "I can definitely say that I am very disappointed to announce that we will not be uploading videos until the last week. Our original plan was to document our progress with the sport that we had to do on that certain week, edit and post the videos. However, we both got caught up in our school work and volleyball and time caught up to us. Saying that, I have learned this week that you should NOT wait until last minute to do stuff.. do it as soon as you can so you do not have to worry about it (like we do, lol)." Melia: “I was very upset when I realized the videos were taking longer to edit than we expected. With our busy schedules, it was hard to incorporate editing our videos into our day. We will definitely get them edited and finished before Genius Hour is over, but we just cannot edit them in time like we originally planned to do. The videos are super entertaining and took a long time to edit, so everyone should definitely check them out!” Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting grammatical errors. On Saturday, 11/13/21, we went weight-lifting at Gym 365 in Advance. We had a very productive and fun time while at the gym. We competed in 3 different categories - Leg press, bench press, and back squats. Hailey won the leg press and bench press, and Melia won the back squats. While we were competing, we realized that we should do reps of three in order for us to complete that weight. While at the gym, we received some very important information from people and we met a world champion power-lifter. The guy that we met at the gym is a professional trainer and gave us some tips on our form as well as what shoes we should be wearing. He said that when lifting, you should be wearing shoes with a flat sole, such as vans or converse, or you could lift barefoot. We were wearing running shoes with a sole and when we took our shoes off, we could tell a significant difference in how we performed. While lifting, he showed us how our form should be and how to correct it. On benching, your arms should be close to your body, your feet should be on the floor, and you should lower the bar at your sternum. While squatting, you need to sit on your heels, go into a deep squat, and do not let your knees go inward. This was really helpful information for us as we have never been pros in the gym and needed some guidance. Overall Feelings: Hailey: "I would definitely say that weight-lifting has been my favorite sport so far. It was a great experience to meet a world champion power-lifter. I also got to learn a little bit about actual weight-lifting and the techniques behind it. I would rate this a 11/10 experience." Melia: "I really enjoyed weight-lifting. It is definitely something I would like to start getting into more even though I am going to start doing it often with volleyball. I maybe could have kept going and challenging Hailey, but I was pretty sore from volleyball practice the previous night. This experience was really fun as we met some friends who were super helpful and gave us tons of needed guidance." Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting grammatical errors. This weekend, 11/6-11/7, we did a bunch of work on editing our videos. We have been super behind in publishing our sport videos, so instead of recording another sport, we decided to take this week off and catch up. We finally posted our first golf video so if you have not seen it yet, please go check out our golfing skills. We have the 2nd part of our golf video still being edited, and we are still very unsure as of when we will have that video published. We are still trying super hard to edit these videos as fast as we can, but they have a ton of content in them so it takes a little longer than we expected. We also have to edit our tennis and fishing videos. We will post an update as to when those will posted. To see our sports videos, hover over the "Sports" tab at the top of our website and click on whichever sport you would like. We also have worked on our website as well. We edited grammatical and spelling errors on our blog posts, added pictures on our website, and added more content to the pages under the tabs at the top.
Melia: "I'm glad that this week was a chill week. I have been super stressed with school and it was nice to not have one more thing to do. But I am ready to get back at it and start our next sport." Hailey: "School has been stressful for me as well. Work has been piling up which is never a sign. Club volleyball has started and it will take some time getting into that new practice schedule, so having a chill week really helped calm my nerves. Our next sport will be weight-lifting which I am very excited about because it has been months since I have lifted!" Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting grammatical errors. On Saturday, (10/30/21) we finally went fishing! We were finally able to get together after all of these busy weeks! Overall, we would both rate it a 0/10 for many sorts of reasons. Before we got to the pond, we had to fix our fishing poles because with the ones that we wanted to use, the spinning reel was left-handed. So, we had to switch them to right-handed. Melia did all of this heavy work and it surprisingly did not take forever to do. Hailey sat back and watched the show... (as she should, lol) Melia: "I was aggravated at first because nothing was unscrewing, but when I finally used my brain and thought that I should probably use tools, it was easy to switch and I was proud of myself for doing it by myself." It was also rainy, windy, and cold, and we did not catch any fish. We went fishing at the Kinderton pond in Advance with the doubt that there would not be any fish. Hailey thought that there was fish because she had been fishing there before. (BTW.. if you want to go fishing, we both DO NOT recommend going to Kinderton. #WasteOfTime). We both thought we each had a bite during some point of fishing, but we are now thinking that the hook got caught on the bottom or on something. Overall Feelings: Hailey: "There are literal fish in that pond. I have gone fishing there before, and there is no way that all of the fish just died and disappeared. I, Hailey Johnson, strongly believe that there are fish in the Kinderton pond. Melia Privett is solely wrong to say that there are no fish in the pond when I HAVE LITERALLY BEEN FISHING THERE!" Melia: "I was super excited to go fishing because surprisingly, I actually really enjoy fishing. I was very disappointed when we spent 2 hours trying to fish and caught absolutely nothing." *P.S VIDEO COMING SOON* STAY TUNED Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting some grammatical errors. Adding onto sentences that needed a little more explanation. Hey Guys! Just wanted to keep everybody updated! We have finally posted our first golfing experience video, so be sure to check that out! (You don't want to miss out on a good laugh!)
All you have to do to find our golfing, tennis, fishing, etc experiences is to go under the "sports" tab! Be sure to go to our golf tab to see our videos and pictures that we have captured on this experience! 10/27/21 - First golfing experience video posted This weekend, 10/22-10/24 we were not able to go fishing. Once again due to our heavily busy schedules. The good news is that we are still ahead of schedule because we originally planned to do the sport 2 weeks, but we soon realized that 2 weeks was too long. Since we will be ahead of schedule, we have planned a surprise that we will do towards the end of this project. Over this past week, to keep up with our project, we have done some research about fish in general and the history of how fishing started.
Fun Facts about Fish: 1) There are over 30,000 different species of fish. 2) Fish have been on the Earth for more than 450 million years. 3) An estimated number of 15,000 fish have yet to be discovered. 4) The world's most common fish to find is a Grass Carp. 5) One of the world's rarest fish to find is a Devil Hole's Pup Fish. 6) China is the world's #1 leading fish producer. Fun Facts about the History of Fishing: 1) Ancient Egyptians would use things such as woven nets, harpoons, and even hooks to catch Nile perch, catfish, and eel. 2) Early people of India would use harpoons attached to long cords to catch their fish. Harpoons: barbed spear that is attached to a long cord, can be thrown by hand or fired by a gun 3) The first use of fishing rods can be traced as far back as 40,000 years ago. 4) The first rods were made out of six-foot long bamboo, hazel shoots, and thin flexible wood with a piece of horsehair (used as the line), and a hook was attacked to the end of it. 5) Fishing tackle was improved within the late 1600s. 6) Rods were made to be stronger and thinner in the late 1800s. Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting some grammatical errors. Adding more information about fishing and the facts about fishing. This weekend, 10/15-10/17, we were not able to do a sport due to our busy schedules. School has been catching up with us, but this has not hurt us in any way. We are ahead on our schedule, so taking a weekend off did not hurt us. We will use this time to try and map out possibilities of how we want the rest of our project to go. This week we will plan what sport we are doing next and how to prepare for that sport. One thing we do need to work on is our website. Our website is not the neatest at the moment and it needs to be cleaned up and organized. We will most likely take time to do that during our "Genius Hour Time," this upcoming Wednesday.
On Wednesday, 10/20/21, we worked on our website. We are cleaning it up as much as possible because it looks like a complete mess! We have decided to put some pictures in multiple places on our website so that people will be able to get a glimpse of our personalities. Another thing that we will be doing is editing our blog posts and making sure that everything looks really clean and neat. Overall, this has been a chill week for us. Being able to lay around and do honestly nothing can be nice at times, and very much needed. However, this weekend we are planning to fish. Personally for Hailey, she is a very impatient human being, so we will see how that turns out. This weekend's weather is in the 70s, so that is good fishing weather. We will be fishing in Kinderton. They are rumors that there are fish, and some say that there is absolutely no fish, what so ever in that pond. BUT, we are planning to catch some big dawgs! *P.S. our video for golf is coming along slowly. It is taking longer to edit than expected.* Edited on 12/05/21: Looking back, correcting some grammatical errors. Adding onto sentences that needed a little more of an explanation. |
